Interactive Qualitative Model Construction

We describe our approach to support the construction of qualitative models used for predicting the behaviour of physical devices. Model speciication is the process of specifying the properties of a particular device at hand and specifying the domain knowledge needed to predict its behaviour. It can be supported by a set of dedicated editors. Model modiication is the process in which deviations from the expected simulation output are detected , traced back to modelling errors and repaired. We aim to automate the diagnosis of undesired simulation output by invoking an interaction with the modeller who indicates the discrepancy and may provide additional data. Speciic techniques are being developed to remedy each type of modelling error. One example of such a technique is discussed in detail.
